Pell Grant Overview

What Is a Pell Grant?

The federal Pell Grant helps students who have the greatest financial need. Eligible students can receive as much as $5,550. Most colleges participate in the Pell Grant program, and Pell eligibility is a prerequisite for many other federal aid programs.

Pell Grant Eligibility and Award Amounts

The Pell Grant is awarded to undergraduate students with the highest financial need. Eligibility for the Pell Grant is based on the college's published cost of attendance (COA), your expected family contribution (EFC), and your enrollment status.

Applying for a Pell Grant

Apply for a Pell Grant by completing a federal student aid application (FAFSA). If you are eligible, the colleges that accept you will automatically include the Pell Grant in your student aid award.
